LEO RECORDS
Leo Records is a small independent company producing highly original, innovative, improvisation-based new music; music that refuses to be submitted to the market forces, that goes against the grain of current wisdoms; music that asks questions, provokes debate, generates ideas. This is music that matters. Although the catalogue of Leo Records includes composers and musicians from all over the world, the origin of the musicians is not so important. What matters is the originality of the music. Help for playing/decoding/burning audio CDs from our OGG-downloads.

Allegro Con Brio -by Atipico Trio - CD LR 400
Baritone sax, bass clarinets, alto saxes, piccolo, soprano, and tenor sax. Satirical, serious, undefinable, ironic, meticulous, contemporary, futuristic, dated, impassioned, outrageous — these are just some of the adjectives used by international press to describe the spirit of the trio. The sonic universe which the Atipico Trio navigates knows no frontiers. You need neither passports nor visas to travel with them from the Caribbean to the Middle East, from Africa to the Balkans, from North America to Japan. To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 400

Solo ( Milano ) 1979 Vol. 2 - by Anthony Braxton - CD GY 023
Solo (Milano) 1979, it's only natural to release another solo concert played one day later. There are twelve pieces on this CD, but they do not overlap with the compositions performed by Braxton the day before. Five of the twelve pieces come from out of the jazz tradition. Usually Braxton keeps his own compositions and standards separately, but this is a very rare concert when the two came together. Liner notes by Steve Day.

In One Breath - by Ama Jazz - LeoLab 020
The most mysterious recording that reached Leo Records' quarters from the Urals (a mountain ridge that separates Europe from Asia). AMA stands for "Association of Musicians of Avant-garde". They are of The Ganelin Trio school, and like The Trio in the past they will be compared to the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Knives ( Solo Piano ) - by Achim Kaufmann - CD LR 409
This is the second CD by Achim Kaufmann for Leo Records, the first one (Double Exposure, CD LR 289) being his quartet with the American saxophonist Michael Moor. The music of the quartet was called "the finest forward-thinking chamber jazz coming out of Europe today". The solo CD is altogether different. It's a result of many years of investigation of the piano. There are 20 pieces on this CD, and in Achim's words "they are different types of knives, different shapes".To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 409

Solo ( Koln ) 1978 -by Anthony Braxton CD GY 017 Golden Years of New Jazz
Saved from oblivion by Anthony Braxton himself this recording can't be more welcome, for at the time of the release other Braxton's solo CDs are mostly unavailable. But make no mistake: the thing that will strike your ears is how absolutely contemporary this music sounds. Recorded twenty four years ago it sounds as if it has been recorded today. It was a long concert, but we managed to save every sound by editiong out bursts of applause after each piece. Yet it happened to be the longest CD in the entire Leo Records catalogue: 78'02. Blue Purge -by Wally Shoup Trio - CD LR 412
The Wally Shoup Trio follows up its critically acclaimed Leo debut "Fusillades & Lamentations" with another batch of improvisations described as "Fire Music with a lot of Soul". Shoup's alto sax, Reuben Radding's bass and Bob Rees's drums spontaneously combust to create intense music that revels in its hard-boiled elegance. As the title suggests, the Wally Shoup Trio explodes in a soulful exorcism. Another original Shoup painting graces the cover. To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 412

To record the work based on Joseph Brodsky's poem "Nature Morte" Simon Nabatov has assembled an extraordinary ensemble: Phil Minton - voice, Frank Gratkowski - reeds, Nils Wogram - trombone, Simon Nabatov - piano. As Stuart Broomer writes in his notes: "Simon Nabatov's "Nature Morte" is a miracle of craft and vision, a rare synchrony of parts in which text, composition and improvisation are heard as essential complementaries." Triptych -by Anker / Taborn / Cleaver - CD LR 441
The first CD in Leo Records catalogue of the Danish saxophonist Lotte Anker with two American partners Craig Taborn on piano and Gerald Cleaver on drums. The method of these musicians is collective improvisation based on many different kinds of music with tremendous capacity for pure linear invention. As Stuart Broomer writes in his notes: "This is extraordinarily melodic music and often contrapuntal...we are in the vicinity of a group that possesses a special presence, the musicians alert to one another¹s nuances, but beyond that, articulating together the complex lacework of our collective time."To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 441

Happening -by Carrier / Maneri / Neumann / Cote ... CD LR 451/452
Double CD. This is the first (double) CD by Francois Carrier in Leo Records catalogue. "He is one of Quebec's (and Canada's) essential musical voices, a saxophonist who has combined commitment and discipline with intuition and inspiration to gradually realize an arresting musical vision, one that is compounded of free-jazz traditions and a compellingly personal melodic invention. On Happening, Carrier combines both long-standing and fresh musical partnerships with free improvisation and contrasting tonal systems to reach levels of sometimes startling immediacy" (Stuart Broomer).

Introspection - by Perelman / Hertlein / Duval / Baker CD LR 455
Ivo Perelman continues his sonic exploration with string instruments as started on "Sieiro" (with cellist Thomas Ulrich) and followed by "Alexander Suite" (with CT String Quartet). Here he is joined by sympathetic violin player/singer Rosie Hertlein and reaches a new plateau of his chameleonic understanding for string sonorities. Superbly fueled by Dominic Duval (bass) and Newman Taylor-Baker (drums), the music - at times sounding like an intricate contemporary string trio or a powerful jazz quartet - echoes the depth and introspection of Perelman's own work as a visual artist. Includes booklet with 9 beautiful reproductions of his paintings. To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 455

Draught - by Szilard Mezei International Ensemble - CD LR 447
Szilard Mezei is an ethnic Hungarian living in Serbia-Montenegro. The emergence of a major talent from that region can only be compared with the emergence of the Ganelin Trio from the depth of the Soviet totalitarian regime some thirty years ago. The listeners who are open to both the jazz tradition and new music will be struck by the depth of composer-violinist Szilard Mezei's connection to the music of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and Anthony Braxton, as well as the distinctiveness of his compositional approach. Born in 1974, Sziilard Mezei is strongly connected to the tradition of Hungarian folk music which has a history of collective improvisation, but is not merely visiting the tradition, he is making it his own. Mezei's eight piece international ensemble was recorded live at the 10th festival of jazz and improvised music in Serbia & Montenegro. To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 457

Triskaidekaphonia - by Gratkowski / Lehn / Poore - CD LR 461
I can imagine that, having listened to this recording, some reactionary writers might write that the sounds here are more to do with cockroaches fornicating than music. It takes tremendous courage to play the way these three musicians do. Sensitive ears, however, will decern a lot of highly original and totally unique music performed on a very unusual combination of instruments. Frank Gratkowsi - clarinet, bassclarinet, contrabass clarinet, Thomas Lehn - analogue synthesizer, Melvyn Poore - tuba, euphonium.

The Urban Choreographic - by Matthew Mitchell, Duncan Haynes - CD LR 466
The second CD by Matthew Mitchell (guitar, electronics) and Duncan Haynes (piano) in Leo Records catalogue. Recorded in London in June 2005 The Urban Choreographic is a result of total immersion into the diversity and intensity of urban survival in a city that is, at it's best, an example of how humankind can exist in uplifting harmony and, at it's worst, a murderous soup of disaffected and conflicting needs and ambitions. To buy the audio CD-set instead of download, please go to LEO RECORDS - CD LR 466

Pictures In A Gallery - Solo Piano - by John Wolf Brennan - CD LR 464
The first solo piano CD by John Wolf Brennan in Leo Records catalogue. It's been recorded live in two different museums in Switzerland and Russia. 27 instant compositions have been inspired by the great paintings exhibited in these museums. As Stuart Broomer writes in his notes, John Wolf Brennan is blessed with a very quick mind, so his improvisations are always stretching to and from form to such an extent that we can readily confuse the spontaneous with the pre-formed. Compositions 175 & 126 (for Four Vocalists And Constructed Environment) - CD LR 453/454
Double CD. Recorded in 1994 by the 23-piece Creative Jazz Orchestra, Anthony Braxton consideres these two compositions to be one of his most important works. They might be called Anthony Braxton's operas and twenty-page booklet gives full librettos of both. Although the orchestra in question is called Creative Jazz Orchestra the music is much closer to classical/academic avant-guard than to jazz. The scope of Braxton's vision is really amazing, and this double CD is absolutely necessary addition to the collections of Braxton's devotees.

23 Standards (quartet) 2003 by Anthony Braxton - Leo Records - CD LR 402/405
This 4-CD set was recorded during a series of concerts in 2003 by the new Braxton's quartet with Kevin O'Neil on guitar, Kevin Norton on percussion, Andy Eulau on bass and Anthony Braxton on saxophone. The set is destined to make jazz history not only for Braxton's discovery of the most remarkable guitarist to emerge in a decade, but for its special quality of performing standards in an entirely new way and reinventing the tradition. Braxton's work becomes even more valuable and necessary in view of the forces of reaction in jazz. As Stuart Broomer writes in his remarkable liner notes, while a conservative performer merely echoes and diminishes the tradition, Braxton makes known the social, moral, and historical imperatives that drive this music ...To buy the audio CD-set instead of download please go to LEO RECORDS

Trio Mind Games -by Ivo Perelman - CD LR 547
This recording with Dominic Duval on bass and Brian Wilson on drums marks 20th anniversary of Ivo Perelman's recording career. As Art Lange writes in his liner notes, Ivo's creative expression has been almost equally devided between the "abstract" nature of free jazz and the "roots" music of his homeland - folk song and popular music from his native Brazil. Needless to say, Ivo's music developed over these 20 years, but intensity and passion remain constant features of his identity. John Wolf Brennan is a household name in Leo Records' catalogue. Shimmering -by Joachim Gies & Sound/Body/Cells - CD LR 541
Saxophonist and composer Joachim Gies presents his new German-Israeli trio SOUND/BODY/CELLS. With the vocalist Ronni Gilla who summons up the depths of the human voice, subtle drumming of Denis Stilke and unique sounds of Gies' saxophones, the trio reveals uncharted musical territory. They move between the poles of deep, dark urban music and light, transcendental songs of the shamans. Recorded live and unplugged they capture the energy of the future. (FLAC) In Exchange for A Process -by Jason Stein Solo - CD LR 545
It does take courage to record a solo CD on bass clarinet. But Jason Stein knows exactly what he is doing. Being a very active member of the Chicago new music scene, his solos are not songs, per se, nor displays of bravado or ostentation. As Art Lange writes in his liner notes, "his are, to my ear, spontaneous etudes... Stein's solo improvisations are not abstract exercises. They are literally about the way he plays the bass clarinet, how his breath filters through it and is transformed into degrees of pitch, texture, tone color, percussion, and voice..." Living Water -by Evelyn Petrova - CD LR 533
With her first solo CD "Year's' cycle", Evelyn Petrova received a lot of superlatives. 'Be the first to see this rising star' (Songlines), 'a rare find, "bright flame" (Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull), 'hearing is believing' (AllAboutJazz). "Living Water" is a duo record, except we never get to hear her new partner -- dancer and performance artist Tany Khabarova. This CD is based on their live performance entitled Taming of a Butterfly. Living Water is very much a continuation of Year's Cycle -- raw, visceral, gutsy and at the same time subtle and complex folk-rooted music.

Interventions Into Bach And Mozart -by Vyacheslav Guyvoronsky - CD LR 534
Some 30 years ago Guyvoronsky had a dream that Mozart and himself had been drinking wine and confessed their love for music. Mozart encouraged Guyvoronsky to take one of his piano sonatas and compose two more parts. Guyvoronsky did this and recorded the piece. Later on he used the same approach to Bach's French Partita which was written for clavier. Guyvoronsky composed the parts for voice, accordion, flute, bass and trumpet and recorded this as well. That's why the title of the CD is Interventions into Bach and Mozart. To buy the audio CD instead of download, please go to

"Talent and powerful sound exploding through a provocative and risky challenge full of intrigue not only for the audience but for themselves, their musical world and instruments. A tormented search for lost form, replaced by the changing and haunting flow of music and emotions. ... There are really very few wasted notes throughout this long improvised piece, composed through the memory, reflexions and artistic taste of three great musicians."

Is it jazz? Or perhaps avant-garde, European folk-jazz with elements of Chamber embedded within free-jazz style improvisation? Hence, the challenge of attempting to classify music that generally defies rigid borders. In turn, Serbian violaist Szilard Mezei stands mightily as a supreme genre-buster, which is trait that luminously resonates on this persuasive session. (Glenn Astarita).

The Universe Is A Disk -by Hubsch's Longrun Development - CD LR 525
This CD is a brainchild of the tubist Carl Ludwig Hubsch who is one of the four composers on the recently released CD LR 513 James Choice Orchestra. Other members of the Hubsch's trio are Matthias Schubert (tenor sax) and Wolter Wierbos (trombone). The highly original music on this CD has been inspired (but not influenced) by the composers Carl Stolling and Karlhinez Stockhausen. It can be termed as structured improvisation, and, considering a very unusual instrumentation (tuba, sax & trombone), it is music of great fun and wit. Portrait Of An Idealist -by Moscow Composers & Namchylak - CD LR 527
"Portrait of an Idealist" is a very special project. It is a homage to Nick Dmitriev, the man who put together Moscow Composers Orchestra at a very troubled time in the history of Russia - the years following "perestroika". It is partly based on the poetry of the great Russian poet Daniil Kharms, and partly on Sainkho's poetry. What Sainkho tried to do was to preserve in music the spirit of perestroika, spirit of changes, the general mood and atmosphere of those years. Musicians of the Orchestra raised for the occasion and brilliantly transformed that atmosphere into the sound. To buy the audio CD instead of download, please go to

The Dorf - CD LR 523
"The Dorf" is a very large band that plays monthly at the jazz club Domicil in Dortmund, Germany. The orchestra is led by Jan Klare who writes the music for the band. Since November 2006 between 15-25 musicians, out of a pool of about 30 players, come together to rehearse, eat and play a concert in the evening. It is sort of a loose, but still collective thing and it¹s very exciting. "THE DORF IS HEAVY, RAW AND A LOT OF FUN". An additional track which is almost 16 minutes long contains a (mpg) video of a life performance that can be watched on a computer. To buy the audio CD instead of download, please go to

Kor - by Joelle Leandre / Akosh S. - CD LR 522
Every new CD by Joelle Leandre on Leo Records becomes a special event. On this dazzling duet recording with multi-woodwind ace Akosh S. (Szelevenyi Akos) at the Olympic Cafe in Paris the musicinas present seven works with a gait that intimates poetry in motion. Glenn Astarita writes in his liner notes that one might call this recoding magic, for the music in whatever form or stylization is rarely as deep, moving and potent. Lapslap: Itch -by Edwards / Schistek / Parker - CD LR 516
Ten Improvisations for Instruments and Live Electronics
Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Lapslap emerged from a desire to make well-formed music in realtime using computers and instruments. The group freely combines computer solos with instrumental trios and any combination in between: in one set, instrumentation can range from the purely acoustic piano/sax/horn to the completely electric laptop/laptop/synth. The music draws from traditions ranging from avant-garde classical, free improv/free jazz through to improvised electroacoustic/glitch. To buy the audio CD instead of download, please go to

The Synth Show -by O'Leary / Wollesen / Saft - CD LR 521
This is the eighth CD by Mark O'Leary on Leo Records. He's played and recorded with outstanding musicians, old and young. Some writers considered his work to be eclectic, but over the years Mark O'Leary has redefined the very term 'eclectic'. The Synth Show recorded in Brooklyn with Jamie Saft on Synths and Kenny Wollesen on drums encompasses a broad terrain from free jazz to fusion to synthscapes to pop, quite the poly-aesthetic blend spiced by Mark's breathtaking chops. Christmas Concert -by Guyvoronsky Kondakov Volkov - CD LR 520
Guyvoronsky (trumpet), Kondakov (piano) and Volkov (bass) are well known Russian musicians from St. Petersburg. There is no leader in this trio and all three are equal parts of the whole. Although they play only original compositions the main idea of the trio is to find the highest level of interaction and improvisation. They performed in California and Don Heckman gave them the highest marks in Los Angeles Times: "...compelling performance, high skills, original approach to the improvisational art..., finding ways to enliven jazz from the wellspring of their own creative culture". Caprichos -by Vyacheslav Guyvoronsky - CD LR 519
Caprichos is a less jazzy work by Vyacheslav Guyvoronsky, one of the best Russian composers working today. It consists of 43 short pieces recorded by the Guyvoronsky's trumpet and a string ensemble. While the music for the string ensemble is rigorously structured, the trumpet improvises, flies above and away. It seems that Guyvoronsky can't help it, for his roots, heart and soul are in free jazz. The whole thing is Guyvoronsky's response to Goya's etchings by which he was greatly impressed and inspired. Russian Folksongs In The Key Of Rhythm -by Masloboev - CD LR 517
This duo of father and daughter is a real find from the depth of Siberia. Evgeny and Anastasia take the mood of the ancient Russian folksongs and envelop them with subtle rhythmic sensibilities creating something totally unique. Evgeny plays a huge array of instruments - from drums, block-flutes, vargan and marimba to frying pan and kitchen utensils - while Anastasia sings. The genre they create is difficult to define. The closest we can come up with is ethno-jazz. Some pieces from this CD were chosen for the series of programmes about Russia "Journey with Jonathan Dimbleby" broadcast by BBC.
