  We are so proud of all our authors in the Melange digest. What a wonderful accolade to garner four stars from Romantic Times. Considering this book contains an M/M romance we think this is a groundbreaking review as RT often does not recognise male/male stories as romance.

  Tom McClary opened his eyes, sat up in the dark and listened. Something awakened him. The night sounds were almost familiar now. The eerie calls of the swamp dwellers didn't seem so frightening anymore.
  
  He lay silent, staring at the dark ceiling of the shelter and let his eyes adjust to the darkness. Noticing the seam of light framing the entrance to the shelter, he realized that the door stood slightly ajar.
  
  Strange, he remembered closing it before they went to sleep.
  
  Quietly, so he wouldn't disturb his wife, he slipped from the mattress and walked to the door. About to close it, he heard a soft moaning sound from outside.
  
  Stepping into the night, he looked at the two moons shining brightly above, they were close together, almost touching. Soon they would part again, each going in a different direction.
  
  Again, he heard a soft moaning. It came from the small clearing on the other side of the thick brush that separated the sleeping quarters from the recreational area. They called it that because of the pond and the small stream of fresh water that flowed into it.
  
  Out of curiosity he walked around the cluster of shrubs, after a moment of hesitation he stepped back into the shadows. The bright light of the moons illuminated the slim naked female figure writhing on top of someone in the tall grass. Her face was upturned, and he recognized Orona, there was no mistaking her delicate oriental features. For a small woman she carried surprisingly large breasts, firm, conical shaped, with long nipples. Rotating her round buttocks with ever-increasing speed, she turned her face toward the moon, cried out softly. Then she stopped moving and sat quivering for a long time. Sighing, she lifted up.

  She had emerald eyes. They sparkled with bright iridescent colors behind extremely long eyelashes. She was not human. Not even of human stock. The planet she came from so far away from the known sector of Human space that I never heard of it ... and she was the most beautiful creature I ever laid eyes on.
  
  She laughed as I rolled away from her, gasping for breath. I've been known to brag about my sexual prowess, but this female just put me through an endurance test, and she didn't even breathe hard.

  Shortly, clutching our meager belongings we boarded a twenty foot, weather-bitten craft my fellow passengers referred to as longboats, the bottoms of which held a couple of inches of water that leaked through their deteriorating hulls. We were rowed by a pair of stubble-faced sailors, who looked and smelled as if they’d spent their last hours ashore in the local tavern, to a ship waiting at anchor a distance offshore. In spite of the cramped conditions and the dreariness of the day, I felt no sense of loss at leaving the austere edifices and backbreaking work England epitomized in my mind. Instead, I thought joyously of beautiful, green America, which Darcy described glowingly in his letters, and of being reunited with the most wonderful young man in the world.
  
  My daydreaming stopped short as the smaller craft bumped against the ship. I glimpsed her name on the bow. The Stella Maris. She looked an elegant craft, freshly painted a gleaming black with a ribbon of white midway up her sides, one of the finest ocean-going vessels about the Portsmouth docks that day. I felt my heartbeat quicken, my breathing become shallow as I prepared to embark on the greatest adventure of my life. I wondered why such a majestic ship would be used to transport lowly immigrants when British manufactured products would be a much cleaner and more profitable cargo.
  
  Any further speculation on the matter ceased when I was abruptly shoved along by one of the sailors who’d rowed us out to the vessel and told to get aboard ‘smart and proper or be left behind.’ Having no desire to miss my one chance to America, I scrambled hastily up the dropped rope ladder lying against the Stella Maris’ sleek side, not pausing to worry that my shabby dress might be affording the sailors and passengers below a view of my ragged undergarments. I didn’t care. If this was part of the price I had to pay to get to America, I would gladly do it. As I reached the rail, a big, grubby hand reached out to propel me over her bulwarks.
  
  As I stumbled onto the cleanly swabbed deck, my boot caught in the hem of my cloak. I pitched forward and would have fallen had not a pair of strong hands caught me and steadied me on my feet.
  
  “Careful, young woman,” a male voice, heavily iced with annoyance, ordered. “If you persist in stumbling about the deck, you’ll soon find yourself in the water. And this ship cannot turn about for anyone foolish enough to fall overboard.”
  
  I looked up into eyes as gray and cold as hoarfrost. A tall man, over six feet I reckoned, with coal black, curling hair and a face most women would find breathtakingly handsome, glared down at me. Broad shoulders towered over a body, muscularly lean and lithe as an athlete’s. He wore well-fitted tan breeches with gleaming knee-high boots, a white linen shirt and brown leather jerkin. His caustic remarks, however, instantly clouded over his physical attractiveness. I angrily drew myself up to face him.
  
  “Thank you, sir,” I snapped, freeing myself from his hands with a swift, impatient shrug. “I wouldn’t think of falling overboard. I might foul the wake!”
  
  “Sharp-tongued little wench, aren’t you?” he said as embarking passengers glanced furtively at the stranger and me. “And quite alone, I see. Luckily no poor, innocent man has yet fallen into your gentle clutches.” The last words reeked of sarcasm.
  
  “I’m on my way to be married, sir,” I retorted. “My fiancé is a fine gentleman who knows how to speak to a lady. You could take few lessons from him, Mr…”
  
  “Captain,” he corrected. “Captain Barret Madison, master of this vessel. Mr. MacIntosh,” he called out before I could recover from my surprise. “Take this sweet young thing below and show her the steerage quarters. Perhaps after a couple of weeks under the deck, she’ll be less likely to spew insults at her captain.”
  
  “Aye, sir.” A burly seaman seized my arm and jerked me toward an open hatch through which rag-tags like myself descended to the bowels of the great ship.
  
  I glanced back at him as he stood against the boom of the mighty vessel. In the fog, his silhouette looked commanding and virile before the framework of lofty masts and rigging. Then MacIntosh pushed me into the darkness of the hold.
