The Adirondack Park’s sheer size of six million acres is often quoted by park rangers and historians, and this factoid is typically followed by a list of better known National Parks that can, collectively, fit inside the Adirondack Park’s boundaries. But what makes the Adirondacks special, and in my mind truly progressive, is the belief that people and wilderness can and should coexist inside park boundaries in a sustainable way. Think about that for a moment. My family and I are permitted to make our home sweet home inside the Adirondack Park of upstate New York, along with over 130,000 other residents—all we have to do is follow the strict land-use guidelines as defined by the Adirondack Park Agency so that future generations have the same opportunity to experience wilderness. My aim was to select photos for our 2010/2011 calendar that capture the ongoing relationship between people and wilderness inside the Adirondack Park of upstate New York. Thanks for helping us make progress!
