Tomas Eucov is a simple farmer on the outskirts of Nairobi, trying to make a living in the shadow of the Building. After the murder of his father he soon finds that he has no choice but to work for the company that controls all of Africa; Halcyon. His sister, Katalina, hates the company that failed to protect their family, and knows that working for Halcyon is more than just a job; every employee is required to accept the implant, a reference device implanted directly into the brain that gives instant access to the entire knowledge base of humanity but Katalina suspects that the flow of information may not just be one way. Tomas soon discovers that his place in the universe is smaller than he'd ever imagined. It appears that the stars themselves are trying to talk to us, and what they are saying may not be something that everybody wants to hear. Humanity, it seems, is not just a random occurrence...
