In a rainy summer a fisherman, Uncle Tom, entertains the holidaymakers telling stories, myths and legends of the area. The tales are short, brisk, amusing and varied, interspersed with poetic touches and humour. It portrays a popular Galician aesthetic of oral tradition on the topic of communication. Uncle Tom’s life intermingles with the stories in an unusual structure of novel. The initial tone of comedy decays with Uncle Tom and gradually changes to drama; the old sea lion who, when in his prime was an outstanding entertainer, in his is old age is lonely and nobody listens to him except his dead wife, with whom he spends the nights talking in the cemetery.
