The Internet Peering Playbook: Connecting to the Core of the Internet is a new
book by renowned peering expert Bill Norton. It is a long overdue analysis of
the trends and developments of peering and the techniques that networks
should use to make the most of their peering agreements. It has already
proved extremely popular with peering coordinators and network engineers
plus those who just want a better understanding of how peering works in
practice.

The overall content is based on Bill's years of experience and the success of
his seminars and teaching programmes. His course... More > materials and lighthearted
approach to getting his message across have proved extremely popular and
have been used at numerous of industry events around the world.

Central themes to the book include the Internet core and its relationship with companies that
operate the central infrastructure, and the overall "interconnection machinery". Norton
models the Internet as a global Internet peering ecosystem and he eloquently describes the
players, their positions of power, and their corresponding motivations and potential
behavior patterns.

Printed in full colour and packed with hints and tips, The Internet Peering Playbook features 14
in-depth chapters and a vast number of detailed diagrams to illustrate how the peering concepts
he describes work.

About the Author
Bill Norton a well respected industry peering expert. William B. "Bill" Norton is a consultant, author
and highly sought after public speaker and international recognised expert on Internet
peering. With over 20 years of experience, Bill has focused his attention on knowledge
sharing with the broader community in the form of presentations, white papers, and
private on-site consultations.

Bill's career in the industry began after he received his Computer Science degree from
State University of New York Potsdam in 1986. He is noted for having developed the
first business plan for the North American Network Operator's Group (NANOG) and
was its Chair from May 1995 to June 1998.

It was at this time that he also received his MBA from the Michigan Business School.
It was also in 1998 that Bill co-founded Equinix holding the role of Chief Technical
Liaison for the company until 2008. By then the colocation provider had grown from a
startup to make an Initial Public Offering (IPO) where the market cap was a staggering
US$3.6B. During this period he was spending approximately 90% of his time working with
the peering coordinator community focussed on building a critical mass of carriers, ISPs
and Content Providers and this led to him documenting the core values that peering
provided for the Internet. His research ultimately established valuable markers in
the industry such as the break even point for peering and also estimating the true value of an Internet Exchange in the market place.

This initial work was developed into the publication of a series of white papers
identifying interesting and important peering topics. Bill has understandably been much
in demand to discuss these ideas and has presented at in excess of 100 forums as a
result. It was through these activities that he was able to establish the relationships
necessary to attract the Tier 1 and Tier 2 ISPs, the Cable Companies and Content Providers
necessary for what he refers to as a healthy IXP ecosystem.
