Altus Press adds to their collection of hero pulp reprints with the first of 3 collections of the Crimson Mask stories.

The Crimson Mask is one of the lesser known hero pulps, published by Thrilling (also known as Better or Standard). These stories appeared in "Detective Novels" over a four year period (it was a quarterly publication). There were a total of 17 stories. Most were by Norman Daniels (about the first 10), and the rest are unknown. All were published under the "Frank Johnson" house name.

The Crimson Mask was really druggist Bob Clarke, who fought criminals as the "Crimson Mask" due to his police father being killed in the line of duty. Like most... More > pulp heroes, his outfit was a dark suit with a crimson mask and gun.

This collection reprints the first 5 Crimson Mask. The next 2 collections should collect the rest. I am uncertain if they will include the 17th story. This one was published in "Popular Detective" almost a year after the demise of the series, with all the characters re-written. So who knows. < Less
