My wife and I are both from the Detroit area. My wife remembers that the story was read on radio on Thanksgiving evening when she was a child; it was the official start of the Christmas season. At the time, her Mom worked for the Detroit News, so she always knew when it would be read. Every year, as Christmas approached, she's looked for the story on line, so that she can read it to our grandchildren. This was the first time we found it.
I think you have to be at least 60 and from Detroit to remember the story...
