This is yet another excellent collection by Altus Press.

This book collects Lester Dent's 5 Lee Nace/"Blond Adder" stories. These stories, which ran in 5 consecutive issues of "Ten Detective Aces" was an early "gadget hero" by Dent. Lee Nace is a private detective who tackles 'weird menace' stories. For Doc fans, we can see some examples of gadges that Doc would adopt.

Dent actually has done several 'gadget heroes'. The excellent intro by Will Murray touches on several. The first was the short-lived (2 stories) of Lynn Lash. I'm not sure if these are currently available. The next one was the "Crime Spectacularist" (3 stories) which have been... More > reprinted by Pulpville Press thru Lulu. The final was Click Rush, who had 18 stories published in Street & Smith's "Crimebusters" pulp. These stories are seeing print in various reprints by Sanctum Books (who is reprinting Doc, The Shadow, The Avenger, and The Whisperer).

With Lee Nace, we have an interesting gadget detective. We learn in one story that he has the training to be a doctor and a lawyer. He doesn't care a gun (like Doc), but carries a canvas bag of equipment. Along some of the devices he carries are a metal skull cap that looks like his haid (like Doc uses, but here better described), knockout darts hidden in cufflinks, a panama hat impregnated with a knockout gas, and more.

There are few supporting characters. The third story introduces Nace's cousin, who, like Pat Savage, joins him but as an assistant. Strangely, the fact that she's his cousin is briefly mentioned in the next story and overlooked in the final one.

Some stories almost seem a tryout for storylines used in Doc Savage. We have a story of stolen oil from the Oklahoma oil fields, a weird meteor menace, another dealing with a green skull and a poisionious green skeleton.

Overall a good collection for Dent fans. Its nice that more of Dent's non Doc work is seeing the light from various pulp reprint firms like Altus. < Less
