The transformation of a blank piece of fabric into a work of art using wax and dye is the definition of a batik. The end creation is a reflection of the artist and the cultures and ideas that they are influenced by. Every aspect of batik is rich in symbolism: the colors, motifs, and designs, as well as the way it is made, folded, and worn - an expression of the people who make and wear it. For 14 months, I traveled to study the different techniques of this art form and in each country, paint my own designs on cloth. The variety of patterns and designs that emerged are a reflection of the cultures and societies in which they were made.
