Laurie is a young girl when her innocence is brutally taken, and in the three years since she hasn’t spoken a single word and is terrified to be left alone on her parent’s farm in 1870 Ohio. She knows the only way to keep from giving in to the terror threatening to overwhelm her is to stay busy, and she steps into the shed to get her hoe, unaware that when she steps outside a stranger will be standing there. Brian Ramsey is searching for a job but the beautiful Laurie doesn’t give him a chance to explain. She attacks him with the hoe, and after he wrests that from her, she pulls her Da’s knife on him. Brian takes that from her, too, and Laurie resorts to kicking and biting. In exasperation, Brian puts the feisty young woman over his knee and spanks her, vowing not to let her rise until she apologizes! Laurie is shocked to realize that a spanking accomplished what all her parents tender tiptoeing around couldn’t, and discovers that she can speak. But, what to do about Brian…?
