Apr. 22, 2010 By Sylvia Wright
In draft format, Wright’s book received the 2006 Writer’s Connection VA Book Competition Award.

Through donating an excerpt from her book, Wright is one of nation-wide contributors to an anthology recognized by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge with their 2009 George Washington Metal award.

Described as “heartfelt” by Bonnie W. Garber, reviewer for the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star, Garber advises readers to read more in the rhythm of a poem and let Wright’s essays and poems speak to them.

Many say “don’t judge a book by its cover”. However, this book’s cover accurately conveys its contents. Pictured is a young woman leisurely strolling down a path worn... More >g down a path worn smooth. The pictured pedestrian is fully enjoying the richness of the natural environment in which she finds herself. Sylvia Hoenhs Wright’s book is an invitation to join her as she strolls down this path, reflecting on those defining and teachable moments in her life. She fondly recalls “sharing breath-taking sunsets with my grandparents” and how a farming lifestyle enabled her family to be “totally self-sufficient in spite of a national recession.” Wright reminds her readers of the value of owning land and knowing how to work it. But her book also encourages us to nurture the relationships we have with family, friends and professional associates.
--- Jackson Advocate newspaper - By Anne T. Sulton, Ph.D., J.D.

“Wright’s writing is thrilling, to tell the truth. She really nails it. I’ve laughed and loved her articles and columns. Wright’s words remind me why I love to work in the earth in the first place.”
ÂŹ --- Gigi Amateau, author of the acclaimed
young adult novel Claiming Georgia Tate

“Because I was an abandoned child I know very little about what my heritage might be -- still this book re-enforced my desire to--- in my lifetime--- start a Smooth Path for my children and grandchildren.”
--- Mary Louise Cox, author/poet

“If you haven't read "A Path Worn Smooth" by Sylvia Hoehns Wright, I highly recommend it. It is inspirational, stimulating and educational. The author includes meaningful poems she wrote as well as personal experiences, community history and helpful hints to live by. A Bible verse defines chapters that follow. I rarely read a book twice, but I'm re-reading A Path Worn Smooth. There is too much to assimilate in this thin volume in just one reading.”
--- Jennie Degenaro, author

Sylvia's understanding and compassion for the every day ordinary, makes her writing extraordinary!
--- Susie Galvez, author, speaker & beauty Industry expert

“Sylvia Hoehns Wright demonstrates on the pages of A Path Worn Smooth the importance of a woman pondering her life in all its phases, from the beginning experienced to the future desired. She roots her comments and commentaries in her Quaker past; she knows where she is in the present (no small feat in our world of minute-to-minute changes); she faces the prospects of the future with the calm strength of a realist. She examines and celebrates her past, draws strength from what she has learned. The magic: so can the reader! As a poet, publisher of a poetry magazine for 22 years, essayist, novelist, and teacher, I can say ‘I wish I’d written this!’”
--- Jean Hull Herman, author & poet

In writing A Path Worn Smooth, Wright shows us how important the legacy of shared experience is to all of us, but most especially women. I found the sections on caretaking of places and things of particular interest since they touched on subjects dear to me. Too often, we are caught up in the need for progress to the detriment of our history; but in a civilization that is constantly looking forward, how do we best preserve our rich heritage? Wright offers some common sense advice on this score. Each sectioned is prefaced by a line of scripture and ends with a content related poem. Part self-help, part history lesson, part inspiration, A Path Worn Smooth is an inviting and engaging read.

In a series of essays, Sylvia Hoehns Wright captures her family history as she reminisces about “yesterday’s child”. Stories of her parents, grandparents and Civil War tales from her family annals capture the readers interest. We learn of the legacy role of women in her family which has influenced her since childhood. Chapters on advice and family memories bring the reader’s own memories to consciousness. Each chapter concludes with an original poem.
In Part I she moves from her rural childhood and grandmother’s mentoring to Part 2 about other women mentors in her life, including some from NLAPW. The author takes us from a mood of reminiscence to proven advice from those mentors. Part III deals with caretakers: of family heirlooms, of family members, of herself. Finally her nostalgic memories of physical surroundings and their influence on her as a sense of belonging to a community complete the book.
Using a conversational tone, Sylvia sounds like she is sitting next to the reader speaking in confidential tones. An easy read, it is both interesting and enjoyable. As Women’s History Month is celebrated in March, this book serves our fair sex well. In her own words, she shares that “if it were not for an EEOC forced hire in 1981, I would not have experienced an IT corporate career.” She then asks: “Who are the women in your history that influence creating your path of opportunity, and, perhaps more importantly, are you presently creating stepping stones – a path – for those that follow?” This question crucially sums up her theme of “A Path Worn Smooth.” < Less
