This, is a “Glimpse Between the Ears” of some of the Troopers who fought the Vietnam War. It is Raw, and unvarnished without any Political Correctness. All the worries, climate, and other difficulties, mental conflicts are there, and the way they affected us, is there, too. But that is for ALL of us, Infantry, Artillery, Armor, who-ever. No sugar coating, because in respect to Us, the “Vietnam War” Generation, many of who’s SONS/DAUGHTERS are fighting the CURRENT WARS, FOR OUR CURRENT crop of combat veterans at least SOME of them are the same concerns, problems, etcetera. My prayer is that it not only informs THIS generation about a small portion of THE HISTORY OF WAR, and helps all realize that in the minds of the people who fight it they are ALL the same, no matter what ERA, country, or time frame they are fought in, but provides insight into the inner-workings of the minds of “The war fighters” and those of us who when the “Chips were down” performed as Riflemen First.

I spent most of 1967 and part of 1968 living one arm's length from Sgt. Mike's story. He was one of my troops and stepped into my job when I rotated home at the end of my tour. He was my comrade and my buddy on many combat missions. In 'A Rifleman First' he has written about the real life of a combat artillery battalion in a guts out, fast moving narrative. This is what it feels like to be a combat soldier and a combat veteran. No BS, just the smells, sounds and terrors of war as soldiers experience them. I have been moved and inspired by this important story. 'A Rifleman First' is unique amongst books about the Vietnam War; a great story beautifully told.
