"Slice and Dice" I was surprised as I read this collection of reviews and essays that reflect the 40 years of Jon Breen's literary life that there were so many authors that I had read that he considered good writers. And that there were so many authors I had yet to enjoy. Jon is truly the successor to Anthony Boucher. No one can stab to the heart of a novel or story as precisely (and concisely) as Boucher and Breen, and it is a stroke of serendipity that one took over for the other at just the right time. All serious writers and readers of contemporary mystery fiction will find this one of the most important reference books ever published. With A SHOT RANG OUT and Francis M. Nevins' collection, THE ANTHONY BOUCHER CHRONICLES (also by Ramble House), you have practically the whole history of 20th century mystery fiction sliced and diced.
