"Carl's Story"
Carl’s Story: The Persistence of Hope, written by Von Petersen is one of the most graphic, bone chilling, riveting, true biographical accounts of what happened in our world almost three generations ago.

The story opens with a short few paragraphs of part the ending of the book, but we are soon to be introduced to life in a quiet peaceful village where everyone goes about the daily business of earning their livings, raising their families, and practicing their faith.

Hollywood could not have devised a scarier motion picture, to keep the viewer on the edge of his seat. The best horror film of all time could not hold a candle to the true eye witness... More > biography that unfolds for the reader of this book. Six letters, SS and NAZI, turns this happy village upside down, creating mass death and destruction, and of unspeakable crimes on humanity, where the reader finds himself caught up in the terror and cannot help himself being transported back in time to try to survive the onslaught, becoming one of the victims.

Von Petersen takes this account, as told to him by Carl, the main character of the book, and a survivor, and by using his unusual gift of creating electric verbal images, paints Rembrandt-like portraits, indelibly, in our mind’s eye. This reader was awed by Von’s talent and ability. His descriptions remind of James Michener, a DaVinci with a pen, in his time., There has been many books written about the Jews and other groups, in Germany, Poland, and all over Europe, and their plight and elimination in the “death camps”, but no other book pulses, day by day, almost hour by hour, with the helplessness, pain, and absolute terror, that these people had to deal with. The story is told though the senses of a teenager living from being 14 to 20 years of age. Carl was of that age at that time in his life, and had to bear six years of living torture beyond description, to survive. Every moment in this book was told to Von by Carl himself, and there is no doubt in my mind that Von was as shocked to hear of these events as I was in reading this book.

It is an important book to read at this time as there are many factions in our society that truly believes that these stories and books were fairy tales, invented images, and that none of this ever happened. They also believe it was, and is a plot to demean Germany ( the Nazis and the SS) during WWII.

This book is one that should be read by all. Being Jewish, myself, perhaps holds a bit more meaning, as it well could have been me, but for the grace of God, that let me be born in the USA…..and not in Europe, growing up in the 1930’s. I knew of these things that happened at that time, from other books and motion pictures, and of the 6 million that we lost, but I never was so shocked and moved as I was after reading Von’s chronicle.

My personal hope is that you can read this vivid account and also feel the way I do ….thanks MEL
