The Tell-Tale Heart first saw publication in The Pioneer in January of 1843. With this story Edgar Allan Poe created an atmosphere of escalating madness that became the new standard of horror writing. Poe has also been credited with spawning other entire genres of fiction such as the modern day detective story and science-fiction. Poe’s writing inspired countless authors who came to prominence during the golden age of the Pulp Era. Authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, and Ray Bradbury all published in the pulps during this era.
