"Great techniques and ideas to use for other Costumes"
I love this book, not only has it helped me with one of my gundam costumes in the work, but I have taken the great techniques and ideas he used and i have applied them to my other costumes in the works, from my anime cosplays to my comic book superheroes and star wars costumes.
This Manual truely can be applied to more then just mecha costumes, but relatively any armor costume.
First off, Devin is technical wiz, and for that I do appreciate a lot of his work. He's detailed simplistically complicated, methodological and creative. I appreciated this book for those factors alone. It really helps you with the "concepx and process" of building any type of costume or build using the tools that made him famouse. Which brings me to my "but" part of the review where this book (I've only read this one so far) that lost this publication 2 stars. It's well written and produced; getting into the thought process of the artist is a winner with this book. Procedurally sound, this book, in my opinion as a prototyper, creater, and designer, lacked to features... More > which would make it universally profound for those technically or creatively inclined or not.
Half star lost for the lack of a true tutorial-style approach. Yes, it's not manditory that any tutorial has to be numbered or bullet pointed, but for most that have read any type of DIY or tutorial, step by step is key in keeping the process forulated as to now lose the reader when it comes to repeating or rehashing steps. Not a major losing factor, but he's made up for it with with well written overviews for approach and technique.
The other half was lost for lack of technical explanation with visualization regarding laying layers and panels together, and construction some of the structural points. The visual drafts that are provided are great showing some of the iterations, but I believe a book about building and creative construction could use a lot more visual examples.
By no means should this detour you from picking up this wonderfully written book by someone who's revered as a guru in the field. I can appreciate the approach but it's still very top-level and doesn't really dive into the diligence of measurements and sectioning your pieces. I guess with it being about building robots/mecha props or costumes, the creater has left it open for you to discover your own style and process. Which for me is great. < Less
This is a very useful guide ^^ even if you aren't making a full mech suit it really helps with learning how to make things from cardboard and hot glue =) I am looking forward to more tutorials coming out!
"Mecha fun!"
A must get for any Mecha fan out there. Especally if they ever wished to dress up as one. It Lays a great foundation on how to make your own Mecha Costume. With easy to follow instuctions and artwork, to create the base, all you need left is some hardwork and some imagaination. It makes the idea of having your own mecha a step closer.
