The Morsex Machine was invented in 1943 by Capt. Astbury. This book briefs the reader on some of its history and its operational use in North West Europe. Files on Morsex are still retained by the UK’s GCHQ under Section 3.4 of the Public Records Act 1958. The role GC&CS during the Second World War with respect to the Machine invented by Astbury was the cryptographic evaluation of the system. GCHQ the present name for GC&CS still regards the diagnosis of cryptographic weaknesses and the mitigation of any weaknesses as still highly sensitive so such files will not be released. Fortunately other files have been released to the present writer by GCHQ and information from them has been used to write this booklet on the Machine. However, information remains crown copyright and its use is with kind permission of the Director of GCHQ. Other information is gathered from interviews with surviving Phantoms.
