I've provided tech tips and software suggestions to nonprofits for years, and never have I seen such a comprehensive, well-organized guide. Rather than rely on my scattered brain to remember every great tool I find, I keep this meaty reference at my desk. A must-have for the bookshelf of any nonprofit organization, online communication professional, or social change entrepreneur.

I frequently rely on Idealware for tips on finding and using new software. This guide distills the Idealware site's wisdom into a concise, no-nonsense resource for any non-profit. It's a great resource to find the best software to meet the needs you have today and discover the tools that will best help you tomorrow. They've made it accessible and useful for nonprofits at all levels of expertise without sacrificing a comprehensive scope or the impeccable research for which Idealware is so well-known.

Laura Quinn with Idealware here. Just wanted to respond to Sandy's comments -- yes, that's absolutely true. The Guide isn't intended to help you pick specific software vendors, but rather to understand and pick what KINDS of software might be valuable for you. Do you need a digital asset management? Is mobile phone giving likely to be within your reach? If you've wondered if there's tools out there that can help your organization that you don't even know about, this is the book for you. (By the way, they made me put in a rating. I don't want to skew it, but how could I give the book I'm so proud of less than five stars?)

I was very disappointed in this guide. Other than providing 1/2 to 1 page tutorials on various types of software - at a very high level- it didn't really help answer questions on how to evaluate the various software packages in the categories, nor what Idealware feels the top-ranked software packages are. Frankly, for the price, I didn't see nearly enough meat on any of the subjects to make the purchase worthwhile. It was a waste of my money.

I've only recently learned of Idealware and this Field Guide to Software through an Idealware social networking workshop. As the marketing and development director of a small non-profit, I have found the guide to be an accessible and useful resource for those of us who are not technical, but need enough background understanding to make those types of decisions. I am finding the book useful in guiding processes and decisions about software and on-line marketing and fundraising opportunities. I know I will be referring to it, and to Idealware's vast resources, in the future.
