I have been working on different projects building enterprise level software involving many J2EE and Database technologies. One of the major frustration facing developers is how "practical information" related to these two worlds are completely isolated from one another, in fact, it is very common to see the majority of today's developers specializing in one of them and completely ignoring the other. The few who actually can keep following up with both can understand and achieve a lot more.
I found the information in this book to be complete; it describes the notions, the architectures (even those details that are hard to find anywhere) and it gives detailed examples on how it will look like in the code which cuts learning time for engineers a lot.

This is how much I love this book: I only read the first 2 chapters of it, and decided I had to come online just to rave about it. In fact, I purposely signed up to lulu.com just to write this one review.

I want to thank the author for making Java, and programming in general, an easy and fun experience. I'm an off-and-on programmer, only venturing into the "art" of it when absolutely called upon. I've looked at other reference books and how-to guides to programming, and have always just felt uncomfortable with their descriptions and explanations of abstract concepts (and I'm an engineer!). But the writing in this book is so clear and well-written that it has finally given me a... More > clear "mental landscape" of what programming is all about (yes, I'm stealing the title of Eck's chapter 1).

As an engineer/researcher myself, I have come to realize that GOOD writing of technical concepts is one of the most challenging tasks we face. People with amazing technical skills abound. But those with amazing technical AND great writing skills are few and far between. You might not believe it, but no matter who complicated some concepts are to understand, there is always a way to write it so that anybody can understand. This book was able to accomplish this, and Eck should be commended for it. Well done!

I downloaded the free pdf version of the book on his website, but I would gladly buy it for the bargain price of ~$20. Best programming book out there. Other programmers should use this as their standard for writing excellence. < Less

"So easy to understand" I have been trying to learn java but all the other authors made life a little difficult. A novice programmer will not only understand this text but also be able to explain the content to fellow learners.I definitely support your cause. Giving a free online copy of the book is just shocking. I wish all authors were this generous. I am buying myself a copy and so should the rest of you that want to learn how to use java without getting a brain damage.
