Jane Mabry takes on a fierce enemy with no hesitation, a quality that many young people, especially girls, will enjoy. She does the "right thing" even in the face of personal danger, and gets the job done. This fantasy contains many beautiful images of English country life, as well as underwater gardens and creatures. Set in the idyllic 1950's, a time when one remembers how simple things seemed, a small girl makes a difference in the lives of her neighbors and family.

"Real literature for Children" The great thing about Jane in Winter is that it doesn't dumb down the writing for children. Instead it assumes that children are smart, curious creatures who deserve literary prose. That said, there is no skimping on the fantasy element that makes the story so appealing to young readers. What child is not mesmerized by a mystery complete with an evil queen?

So very refreshing after the tedious Scooby Doo and simplistic detective books that my children have been reading. I am buying extra copies of Jane in Winter to give as birthday presents for my nine year old son's friends.

"Jane in Winter by Elizabeth Wix" This is an enchanting tale filled with a delightful mixture of mystery, fantasy, realism and a superbly evil queen!
I read this aloud to a class of fourth graders and they were absolutely mesmerized from the first word to the last.
Elizabeth Wix knows how to spin a great yarn!
