Having not been raised Jewish, I thought of Jewish music as a cultural or religious tradition that only Jews would appreciate. I thought of Jewish music as rather too heavy, introspective and, quite frankly, kind of depressing! Then, in my constant search for thoughtfully documented sheet music for the classical guitar (which I have played for decades), I happened upon this book of Jewish music by Ellen Whitaker. During a moment of broadmindedness, I downloaded a copy. Not only has this book changed my attitude toward Jewish music, but it has brought me much joy. For one thing, the selection of music is surprisingly broad, ranging from religious music sung by cantors to folk tunes... More > originating from Sephardic, Yiddish, Israeli and Oriental sources. Some of it has even hit the charts - remember Joan Baez' recording of Dona Dona?
Not only has Whitaker selected a great compilation of twenty solos and six duets, but she has also gone to extraordinary lengths to present the music accurately (I rarely feel the need to reach for a pencil to override her fingerings)with helpful performance notes. She even includes scholarly appendices addressing the scale structure of Jewish music, an informative glossary, bibliography and discography.
This publication is truly a labor of love and an important addition to my music collection. < Less
