Two teenagers witness a killer dumping a dead woman’s body into a river. After a confrontation, the killer is presumed dead. A city and its many residents are forever changed. When he learns the copycat wants him to publicize a new killing spree in a sequel book, he starts to believe the subject of his bestseller (a man whose existence has been unknown for years) is alive and murdering again for the twentieth anniversary.
