1923 Anson, Texas. JOHN POLAND, a white, wealthy oilman falls in love with his maid, ALICE WALKER, a widowed woman of black descent and endures the hatred, bigotry and envy of a racist white town in a relationship that has no possible way to succeed. John’s black ranch hands are the target of lynching, shootings, and Alice’s house is burned to the ground by hateful whites and later she must flee after finding out the FBI is pursuing her for extortion and interracial dating which is illegal in Texas.
