"Jungmaedel Service, by Chris Crawford"
This, an English translation of the original 1940 Berlin publication, provides a highly detailed and above all fascinating insight into the political and physical organisation of the JM. While the more sobering aspects of the power of a state apparatus to manipulate its youth and program its destiny are covered in the initial pages, it is for this reader, the comprehensive detail of the actual structure and grass roots organisation of the movement which is most rewarding. And from the array of rules and regulations noted, there is a wonderful primacy given to the safety, welfare and health of the group's young members as individuals. (Albeit for the... More > ultimate strength and homogeneity of the group).

From medical supervision, to rules covering overnight stays and rest periods, to travelling regulations, uniforms and grooming, it is all here. The political nature of the organisation aside, these regulatory details could be those of any highly professional and responsible youth organisation.

The author has faithfully reproduced a snapshot specific to a time and place which has held great sway with historians, and with this pamphlet, a simple but rich primary source has been offered to an English audience.

A most worthwhile publication. GP < Less
