"Wake Me Up When Its Over"
Millions of tourists visit Thebes every year. Tim Cooper is just one of them and spent a rather ordinary and uneventful holiday just like the rest. In these days of mass tourism jet travel, the bar is raised for quality engaging travel literature and this book fails to meet it. It reads like your Aunt Mildred's regaling you at Christmas dinner with tales of her package holiday in Rome. At least you can enjoy her pudding while she does!

Cooper's writing style is dull, plodding and contrived as if he were trying to force the mundane to sound exciting. This is no page turner, but rather a good sleeping elixir.

Why was this book published?... More > Cooper's friends were polite and praised his boring prose until he was deluded him into thinking his experience was special and his writing interesting. Perhaps next time he will choose to visit Thebes in a way that will naturally lead to an interesting experience, such as wearing a red party dress.

Much classic traveler's literature is available on Google Books from the days when travel to Egypt was novel and adventurous that surpass the quality of this work. You should find them more readable and free too! :(=) < Less

"Re: Wake Me Up When Its Over" I have reason to believe this review has been posted as a 'joke' by someone who has not read the book. A pity that they think this is funny as its effect will undoubtedly be to harm sales of a work that is being sold to raise money for charity. I hope the person involved will see fit to remove it.

"Leaving Thebes" This book was like taking a journey within my own emotions. It evoked many memories and wonderful feelings that I hold from my own visits to luxor.
It is an excellent buy and the proceeds of the book are going to a very special cause for the children of Luxor, what could be better.
I look forward to any future books by this author.
Thank you Tim for sharing your experiences in this way.

"Re: Wake Me Up When Its Over"
As a Luxor (Thebes) resident, one has to say that peoples holiday experiences are of no particular interest to me personally. However, as a 'speed-reader' I do not get the impression that the book was written from the perspective of the average tourist, indeed Tim Cooper's experiences and perceptions are far from that - one could possibly say quite unique these days.

From the point of view of any occasional visitor wishing to come to Luxor on more than a package holiday experience, and looking for something more adventurous, "Leaving Thebes" could be the book for them. It is packed with useful tips and information which might encourage the... More > 'average' tourist to explore a little further than the hotel swimming pool.

Luxor holds many hidden secret places overlooked by the package holiday with its regulated tours. This book could prove useful for those wishing to get away from the more mundane aspects of guided tours and explore things for themselves. It is a book for the would be traveller, written from one persons experiences; just a tad boring, perhaps, in literary style for some readers, but for others could prove to be the opposite.

Considering the low price of the book, it has to be said that it is good value for money by anyone inclined to become easily bored with sitting around hotel pools every day, and looking for a bit more from their holiday experience. Such a book could open up a complete new world of interest and self discovery in Egyptian life and history not usually found on guided tours, nor on package holidays.

"Leaving Thebes" I have really enjoyed this book as it shows in the truest form how Luxor can afect people and why so many people enjoy visiting there time and time again.
