The protagonist, Nell Massa, pulled me in from Chapter 1. Having been raised Catholic and having a true interest in social issues, I could relate to much of what was on Nell's mind. Perhaps what intrigued me the most was wondering throughout the book what was actually fact and what was fiction...how much of the story was autobiographical. The relationship intrigues and disappointments were so heartfelt. All-around, a great read!

This book explores delightful and devastating relationships that shape the character of a young social activist. Written in the form of letters, Nellie Massa reveals herself to herself and to us in tiny bursts of self-reflection that made me laugh and cry. Her love interests and life experiences ring very true. Although it's a truly fun read, few books capture the pain and sweetness of love and community as well as Made to Write does. And few books have left me with as many questions as answers. I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

My interest was kept throughout the entire novel. It is a great summer read. The twist and turns of life in the central city for the main character is shared with compassion for the reader. I felt as though I was reading the diary of a young adult who matured in an environement that she fully embraced and equally embraced her. I reccommend this novel for insights into the heart, mind, and beliefs of those who live a life of service to the central city. Marie
