I COMPOSED this Mass for mezzosoprano and organ in February and March of 1997. That Easter the Kyrie and Gloria were performed in Jamaica Plain by the Mass’s dedicatee, Clea Nemetz. That summer the entire Mass was recorded privately by Maren Montalbano. However, the complete work was not heard publicly until 26 September 1999. The mezzo was Sharon Derby Gordon from Connecticut, and the performance took place at the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain (Boston), whose precious 1859 Hook organ later perished in a fire.
