"Mission Saddam --a gritty account of a soldier's life in the sand!"
Anyone who is, has, or will deploy to the Middle East --- this book is for you! For combat veterans of Desert Storm, this book is your story. And, if you happen to be, as I am, a military history buff looking for an authentic insider's view of the first Gulf War, Mission Saddam is a must-read.

Written by a veteran of Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Herb Eash tells us about a soldier's life as a member of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment deployed in the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Iraq during 1990-91 -- and his brief but intense taste of combat. Eash is an all-American boy-soldier in his late teens, shipped off to a... More > faraway land to face legions of evildoers headed by the brutal dictator Saddam Hussein. And his true-life account is raw and in-your-face: He writes about the loneliness, despair, and heart-break of leaving his new, young bride back home in El Paso, Texas -- for what many at the time thought would be the "Mother of all wars". His recollections of day-to-day life in the heat and desolation of a Middle Eastern desert battling venomous insects, dehydration, bad food, and seemingly endless boredom are graphic and evocative.

Eash also experienced, albeit briefly, combat. He describes what it's like to be in a shooting war against an unseen, mysterious enemy. Eash's memoir, which reads very much like a war diary, includes haunting scenes of death, destruction, and charred corpses, set against an eerie backdrop of burning oil wells and smoke-blackened skies.

"Mission Saddam" is a fascinating read, and will be of particular interest to veterans of any war. This book is part adventure story, part social/political commentary, but wholly a work of enduring historical value.
