This is a stunning book - very powerful in form and content. A virtuoso work, a tour de force of poetry writing. I was especially struck by the "Venture" sequence in the Holocaust section, - gripping and hard to put down, though emotionally not easy to read. Writing as a musician, I experienced the urgency and violent rhythms of the Prokoviev music the author refers to. At the same time, one finds romance and humor where least expected.
