"Zen and the Art of Generator Maintenance" This warm and witty memoir is written by former TV writer-producer Lynne Farr (The Bob Newhart Show, The Love Boat), who traded the Hollywood "glitz 'n grind" lifestyle for - first - the gritty downtown LA art scene and - eventually - a "Less-is-More" existence off the grid on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Sort of a modern-day "The Egg and I", "Off the Grid Without a Paddle" can be read (depending on one's predilections) as either a how-to guide for getting away from it all, or a dryly humorous cautionary tale. Either way, it's a funny, breezy read and highly recommended.

"Off the Grid without a Paddle" I loved it! Interesting and inspiring, for all people who dream of someday living in paradise, but who know there must be a catch somewhere. Lynne and her husband manage to overcome the problems and live out the promise of paradise on earth, or at least as close as you can get to it in reality!

"Off the Grid without a Paddle" The dark but funny side of the dream of paradise, Off the Grid without a Paddle made me want to visit Lynne and Shingo...during the dry season. A cautionary tale with a happy ending (a better generator, function solar cells!), the book paints a vivid picture of isolation and independence, with honesty and self-deprecating humor. I felt like I was learning along with the intrepid pioneers, and cheered their every triumph. And I have to admit I laughed at their failures, but only because I knew they'd get through them with wit and wisdom.

"on the plane" After I received this book in the mail, I saved it as a treat for my plane ride home to Canada. The normally boring flight suddenly became an experience of laughter, and non-stop fun! Other passengers stared envious as I devoured the pages, and was actually disappointed to have arrived at my destination (so soon! I haven't finished!!!)~ Lynne's voice throughout the book speaks candidly and makes the read echo an intimate and fun conversation with a colorful friend.

"Off The Grid Without A Paddle" A funny, wonderfully well-written guide to checking out and having a richer life. The scarier the evening news gets, the more I think about this book. I laughed outloud so many times. Who knew pigs and propane could be so entertaining. I envy the author her courage and humor, and her darling, hilarious mate, Shingo. They have so much fun in their unpredictable paradise, it made me want to abandon my appointment book and catch the next boat.
