Werner Popken Stürenburg started his career through a dialogue with other artists, in particular Picasso, who died at the time. His example unleashed energies leading very fast to an individual style. Many of these works are hommages, but some also criticize. References to Max Beckmann, Eugène Delacroix, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Yves Klein, Eduard Manet, Claes Oldenburg, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg and Daniel Spoerri can be found. He was encouraged in this endeavor by the Picasso himself who supposedly said: "What's a painter? And impeded collector, who paints what he can't buy. And then, it's a Picasso again!" This way, he presumably wanted to explain his own obsession with the great masters.
