Rapids in the Stream is an evaluation of the "enthusiasms" of the First Great Awakening. Drawing upon original diaries and accounts, Rapids in the Stream concludes that these amazing phenomena were the result of hypnosis. They were part of a larger phenomena of cultural change as the church shifted from European based traditions to a typically American expression of Christianity
