There's a new book out, Say It Loud! I'm Black and I'm Depressed by Don Barbera. It sheds light on the additional health risk African-American men face from untreated mental illness.

Barbera cites the stigma of mental illness and ignorance of mental health in our community as reasons why Black folk make up 13 percent of the population, but 25 percent of the mental health needs in this country. More than 2 million Black men suffer from depression. Four of the top ten causes of death in the African-American community--stroke, diabetes, cancer, and AIDS---are all worsened by depression.

Barbera's wake up call came when, after years of treating his depression with medication, he had a heart... More > attack. He fell into an even deeper depression after leaving the hospital. He sought professional help and discovered that link between depression and other illnesses. Stuff like depressed men were 70 percent more likely to develop heart disease. Dag.

Anybody writing a book about Black men and depression has my undying gratitude and everlasting respect. Check this book out and spread the word.
