"Sergeant Back Again: WOW! What a Book!"
Jessica Driscoll Whittaker

You're about to enter a world of extremes, a world in which the reality of war becomes the surreal experiences of an Army medic serving in Vietnam during the war years of '69-'70, and his precarious rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center.

This is a graphic portrayal of the struggle for survival in the rice paddies and jungles of the Mekong Delta where corpsmen literally die clawing their way to reach the wounded, where Army Medical Corps surgical teams work night and day in underground tunnels trying to save as many of the casualties from death as possible, and where one medic and his commanding... More > officer lose sight of their selves in their obsession to keep others whole. It is a fascinating view into the simultaneity of deconstruction and reconstruction in a time warped by battle.

It is a singularly remarkable story in that the narrator can take us hovering a few hundred feet over a battle scene and then soar upwards while we look down a world in political, philosophical, and cultural conflict. It's a novel that will certainly change the way you look back at the Vietnam War years as well as the men and women committed to providing medical care to our troops no matter where they were nor the circumstances of their engagement.

"Excellent Book" I was a little surprised to notice this book here on LuLu because I first saw it several years ago in the library at Bethesda Naval Medical Center.

This is an excellent book, and if I had a say (which I don't) I would recommend this to anyone dealing with post-traumatic stress, whether it's as a patient or as a medical professional.
