Applied ethnographic methods from design (design research) have remarkable potential to contribute positively to gains in global health and international development, but there are many open questions regarding the appropriate use of these methods in such contexts. This dissertation is a case study of a design research project examining the information management practices of bagiin emch, rural health workers in Mongolia. In examining serial hanging out (multi-day, design-oriented participant observation) in rural Mongolia, this dissertation helps us understand how design research can achieve its full potential in development. Jaspal S. Sandhu received his Ph.D. in design from the University of California, Berkeley based on this work in 2008. He holds an S.M and an S.B. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
