'Snapshots from the Abyss' feels less like a book of illustrations and more an actual photo album from another world, one both familiar and yet strikingly different. David James has succeeded in not only reducing the visual complexity of the real world through an economy of line, a Master's understanding of colour and a talent for caricature, but somehow in the process manages to amplify rather than diminish our emotional connection to these snapshots. Captions by the author are both touching and droll, as if being talked through a well-loved photo album by a good friend. Wholeheartedly: 5 stars.
