"All it takes to get you hooked..."
I purchased a copy of Wil Wheaton's "Sunken Treasure" about a month ago. I ordered it from Lulu. This was my first experience with Lulu and actually my first book from Wil. Yes, I know, a geek like me just finding "he who embodies all that is Geek" is a little hard to believe but it is true.

I am a recent (okay, about 6 months ago) Wheatonite convert (please God let me be the cool guy who coins a phrase that sticks!), and have found myself fully engulfed in the religion of Wil. When I saw that Wil was a past guest, and was going to be a future guest at the Emerald City Comicon I decided to link over to his blog and check it out.... More > That click of the mouse was the beginning of the adventure. Flash forward to "Sunken Treasure."

I have to say that the whole "Lulu" process was pretty painless, and in about 3 days I had the book in hand. I really like the quality of the book; the paper is a good weight and the cover, a heavy glossy paper, seems as if it would stand up to general handling. The spine was pressed very well and the pages were tight to the spine when opened. I only found one print error (the margin on one page ran into the seam of the spine) in the book. If you were self-publishing this would be a great way to go.

As for the content, well, let me start with the negative. It wasn't nearly long enough. Now I know that it wasn't intended to be a novel, but more of a primer on Wil's writing, and have to say that if this book is indicative of what I will read in his other books then I am sold.

Wil's writing style is, well, I don't know the exact technical word for it if one exists. He writes in a first person narrative, but his writing emulates more of a vocal, interpersonal exchange instead of a literary one. He writes in a familiar, conversational tone that is insightful, descriptive, and easy to read (which in this case is NOT a bad thing).

In every story Wil finds a way to pull you in, and it is as if he is taking your hand and saying "...follow me; you have got to see this!" and then takes you on a trip through his life, through his heart and his eyes. I loved it, and I am craving more. My only complaint is that I will have to order his other books from Amazon, which means that Wil gets pennies on the dollar. Wil, let me send you the cash, you send me the books. More money in your pocket means more opportunity to get you published again. < Less

"Sunken Treasure - Great Discovery" Okay, so I squealed like the total girl geek that I proudly am,when my copy of SUNKEN TREASURE came in the mail yesterday. As I have come to expect (no pressure Wil), I was not disappointed. This is a TOTALLY AWESOME book! I have read all of Wil's books and have the audio book of THDOOL (will soon get JUST A GEEK); Wil is in my top 5 list of writer's who's work I have to get as soon as it is published. He is the GEEK version of Neil Gaiman (who I also LOVE) for me. There isn't a sluggish piece in the entire book. My personal favorite's are ' YOU'RE GONNA BE A GREAT WRITER... ',' SEE A LITTLE LIGHT 'and ' SEAT WITH THE CLEAREST VIEW '. SUNKEN TREASURE is filled with magical gems - I LOVE IT !!!! THANKS WIL.

"Great book." I received this book as a gift from one of my friend. It was a great book. One comment is if it came with more details, it would be brilliant.

"Amazing and Engaging; Mission: Accomplished" This was the first book by Wil Wheaton that I've read. I've checked out his blog from time to time, but never called myself a "fan." When I saw this book offered as a downloadable PDF, I thought what the heck: I'm bored, his blog is entertaining, throw the guy a few bucks. Three minutes later, I started reading it on my PC.
Next thing I know, it's over already - that was the last page. I love when I can lose track of time like that. And I didn't want it to end. I expected it to be interesting, but wasn't prepared for it to be so amazing and engaging. I was left with a deep respect and admiration for Wil and his work.
The purpose of a sampler is to introduce you to all the flavors (and leave you wanting more.) Mission accomplished. I'm buying his other books in print, and will be following his career more closely from now on. Fan Count: +1.

"That Cocoa is Delicious"
Wil Wheaton's Sunken Treasure is a miniature ball of goodness, wrapped in nostalgia, heated in the oven of experience, until its center is pleasantly warm and moist. The majority of the works here are reproduced, hence the sampler part of the subtitle, however, don't let that put you off, the attention that Mr. Wheaton puts into each story makes them seem as fresh on the twenty-fifth reading as they are on the first.

There's something for every slice of geekdom in Sunken Treasure. From the video game fanboys and girls, to the legions of Star Trek and Star Wars fandom; the drama club kids, to the Roleplaying game... More > enthusiasts, everyone is represented.

At 90 pages long and beautifully, simply, written; the pages of Sunken Treasure fly by, making the time investment required to enjoy this treasure minimal. For anyone looking to jump on the Wil Wheaton train this is perfect station to get on at. The only unfortunate thing about Treasure is that once you finish it you'll feel an overwhelming urge to consume other Wheaton works, Just a Geek, Dancing Barefoot, and The Happiest Days of Our Lives. Frankly, I envy new readers the journey they are about to take and look forward to whatever Wheaton produces next. < Less
