"The Birth of Spring"
“The Birth of Spring” is a must read for fantasy fans and lovers of language.
The old Storyteller begins his tale of what happened “when the seasons stood still and the wheel was unable to turn . . .” and the Summer Queen declared war on the Winter King who held it still.
Gentle Astara, the Summer Queen’s daughter, decides to prevent war, so she sets out for the Snow palace. She is certain that if she appeals to the Winter King, he will release the wheel so that summer may return to the Faery realm. Along the way she witnesses winter laying waste the land, the wildlife, the elements, and humankind. She does what she can to save each one.
When... More > she arrives at the Snow palace she finds a new Winter King whom she’d met once when he was but a boy. He is protected by gray wolves and warriors with swords of ice. The images here are wonderful. Astara knows she must work fast to survive and before her Summer Queen mother attacks the Snow Palace. But this new Winter King is not an easy man to persuade for he has lost much.
Renewal is the usual metaphor for spring. However, this sotry also tackles the dark cold seductiveness of loss and grief. For without loss there cannot be renewal. Never fear, I’m not going to give away the end.
McGathy is a master of the lyrical language that draws the reader into the Faery realm. When you’ve finished reading this tale, you’ll be ready for the next. “But what of fall, Storyteller? How did it come into the world?”
