Why would any sane person pay to have themselves remade into a half-rabbit freak? Any religion which asks its members to do that would sink without a trace... or would it? Find out more in THE FIRST BOOK OF LAPISM!
I really enjoyed The First Book Of Lapism. The book is a collection of four short stories. The stories tell an interconnected tale of the founding of a future quasi-religion called Lapism. Lapists are humans who willingly have themselves "gengineered" into anthropomorphic human-rabbit hybrids. Lapists undergo the procedure in order to become kinder, gentler, more loving creatures than they could have been in human form. Becoming a rabbit hybrid changes human brain chemistry, reducing aggression and leaving the Lapist entirely more snuggly than before. As all furs eventually discover, however, ears and tail do nothing to protect the wearer from human drama. And The First Book Of... More > Lapism is filled with gripping, very human drama. The book's characters encounter prejudice, sexual confusion, alcoholism, heartbreak, death and the emptiness faced by all sentient beings, with or without fur. The book kept me reading late into the night. I *cared* about these fictional people. I look forward to reading a second Book Of Lapism. My criticisms of thre book are minor. The book seems not to have been proof-read at all, and contains a surprising number of repeated words and spelling goofs. These goofs hardly detracted from my enjoyment. I was rushing right along with the story. I will also mention that the book contains no scenes of sexual encounters, between Lapists or humans. Whether this affects your enjoyment of the book is a matter of personal taste. All in all, I enjoyed the book and I thank the author for writing a compelling, believable, mature and thought-provoking tale. < Less
