The changing identity of South Asians who immigrated to Guyana during British colonial rule--from 'coolies' to Indians to Indo-Caribbeans--was the focus of my dissertation for the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford, which I submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy. My dissertation explores the historical roots of South Asian Guyanese identity and tracks its progress over time via a critical review of literature from a range of fields. Throughout my thesis, I also keep a running anthropological commentary on the nature of Guyanese culture, and specifically South Asian Guyanese culture.
