The artist J. Allen St. John is best known for his illustrations of the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, which first appeared in book form from the Chicago based publisher, A.C. McClurg. Nearly a decade before his Burroughs work, his first job for McClurg was this children's fantasy, the only book he ever wrote, The Face in the Pool. His illustrations for this book show that he was indeed the best choice to illustrate the adventures of Tarzan and John Carter. This facsimile edition reproduces the book as published (the color plates are in black and white in this edition, but reproduced in color on the back cover), but in a 6" X 9" format.
