While traditionally discounted by the proponents of the biomedical model, the effect of the mind on health is an essential aspect of holistic approaches to health. We explore this idea of “mind over health,” referring to recent advancements particularly in psychoneuroimmunology and placebo studies. The research reveals how certain cognitive phenomena, including expectation, can modulate immune functions, mainly through the emotional components of the brain. We also identify the limitations of the current research in order to fully understand this problem. Recognition of the recent advancements and the limitations is important for alternative health practitioners, conventional physicians, and lay-people to position themselves at the right place and move forward.
