"Review by Sir John Schofield from UK"
“This is a slender offering which carries an atmosphere of mystery and romance, together with a strangely convincing presentation of Court life in the Europe of the early nineteenth century. The protagonist appears to have a sense of her destiny in bringing about an effective rapprochement between Germany and France; yet her tremulous feelings where love is concerned are clearly expressed against the background of an arranged marriage in keeping with the Byzantine ramifications of European dynastic intrigues.

The romance exists at the rarified level exemplified in the works of poets of the French Romantic School; and there is a realization... More > that purely historic fact is but one dimension to this story, which, if expanded, could well have been a lengthy novel in the historic romance genre.

This Princess Helène evokes something of the numb shock and ongoing suspicion surrounding the death of a Princess of our own time. It has to be admitted that one's appetite is whetted for the altogether lengthier book under the title of 'Hugo's Last Mistress'.

This reviewer took a particularly keen interest in a Royal Family Tree, recognizing certain names with considerable astonishment.”
