"Once upon a time, in New York City..."
Mystery. Suspense. Romance. New York. Fairy Tales. What could be better? I don't know - which is why I recommend this book. It really has it all. Great characters really add to the story. Everyone who I know who has read this really relates to Blanche, or Rose, or Bear, or Fish.
In Blanche we see an introverted, shy girl, who just wants to get through high school practically unnoticed.
Then, there's her sister, Rose. Extroverted, adventurous, she's really all that Blanche isn't - but that's okay. They fit together like puzzle pieces.
Bear drops in. Very mysterious, friendly, but he steers the conversations away from himself - which is fine... More > with Blanche, but makes Rose curious.
And then, Fish. We probably see the least of him in this book, but what is seen has made many a fan-girl. Also mysterious, he looks out for the girls, like Bear does, to make sure nothing happens to him. We see him willing to give his life for someone he barely knows.
Very well-done. Be sure to purchase this one for yourself, because you won't be satisfied with just one read. I bet you'll find yourself picking it up again and again...just like me. < Less

"Double Thumbs-Up!!!" This book is absolutely phenomenal with its unforgettable characters and fast-paced plot. Based on Grimm's fairy tale of Snow White and Rose Red, Regina Doman tells the story of sisters Blanche and Rose, whose lives change dramatically due to the unexpected friendship of a man who calls himself Bear. The girls are quickly caught up in the mystery that surrounds Bear, which leads to danger and life-threatening situations. This is a gripping story of love and sacrifice, as well as an amazing adventure you won't want to miss out on. ~Mae 9/5/07

The book that started it all, in which we meet Bear and Fish, and Blanche and Rose. The lives of the Denniston brothers are on such a different trajectory from those of the Brier sisters that it seems unlikely their paths should cross, unless by a chance meeting in which both parties feel they need to help the other... Be prepared. If you choose to read this novel, you will likely find it witty, thrilling, charming, and difficult to put down when it's getting late and you really should be getting some sleep so you can function the next morning. Further, when you finish, you'll probably want to start right in with Black as Night because you can't get enough of these loveable characters. At least, that's how it happened in this house...

If you are looking for a good read, "The Shadow of the Bear" is one that will literally take your breath away. Regina Doman spins a tale full of vivid images, true-to-life characters, and believable dialog. "The Shadow of the Bear" is a Grimm's fairy-tale "Snow White and Rose Red" retold into a modern setting.
Blanche and Rose Brier live with their widowed mother in an apartment in New York City. One stormy evening, their mother, an E R nurse, arrives home later than usual, and brings a young man inside to warm up. He calls himself Bear, and saved their mother from a car out in the cold. During the next few weeks, he visits often, much to the joy of Rose, but... More > to the dismay of Blanche who does not trust him. He does not tell them who he is or what his mission is, However, with time, Blanch learns to accept him.
Little did any of the Briers know that they would be wrapped into a mystery that is as dangerous as the city its-self. This is a well thoughtout story with values woven into its delightful plot. < Less
