This quite a tremendous book. I've been playing a variety of RPGs since 1980, and love these little books of themed tables. I've no shortage of imagination of my own, but books like this are a great springboard for ideas.
The Wilderness Alphabet contains a number of topics and tables based on the ideas of things you'd find in the wilderness. Each table gives a quick reference for when you're riffing on the players wandering 'off the track' of the adventure you have planned. Further, it could be a great resource for detailing adventures before play, as well.
There are no system-specific rules for any of the material within the Wilderness Alphabet. Indeed, many of the strange things... More > encountered are given no explanation. For example, in the "Archways" table, you might come across a strange archway filled with mist. The book doesn't tell you anything more, which I find excellent. It gives you the initial idea, and then leaves it up to you to explore.
Physically, the book is very nice. It's a little digest-sized paperback, easy to toss into your 'GM's toolkit' along with your dice and other paraphernalia. The art is mostly public domain, but well-used. You can't argue with the classics.
Great book, and deserves to have a spot at every GM's table. < Less
