Exciting Reviews

James Patrick in James Patrick Updike's Blog

Well, my first book, Realm Of Dreams, is getting some reviews from independent reviewers that I sent copies to and so far they are very favorable! It's all very exciting to have others read your work and find value in it!

Holidays are taking up more free time, as is getting ready for the next play my wife and I are directing, but I hope to get in some more work on Solitaire today.

Over on the Review Forums it seems people are wising up to the fact that an honest review is better than a 6 star and "It's great I ordered 12 copies" one from your mother. This can only mean good things for lulu and their authors.

You may also want to check out Gloomwing. It is a new site dedicated to honest reviews of POD books!

Working on new stuff

James Patrick in James Patrick Updike's Blog
Monday 21 of November, 2005
Now that I've got my first novel on Lulu I decided it is time to do a second. I started with my Role Playing game that was last published locally in 1997, but found I was missing some pages from my computer so I'm going to see if I can find them on Back up CDs somewhere!

So I started revising my novel Solitaire. It was published electronically on The Writer's Hood (now sadly defunct) back in 1997 but it is in serious need of a re-write before I have it published on Lulu, so I've started on that. I'm on Chapter 2 right now . . . and I can see it's gonna need a lot of work, especially about 1/3rd of the way in. That's gonna need a complete overhaul. Funny how something you wrote 5-10 years ago can seem so amateurish now, when then you thought it was really great.

First Novel for sale and the downside of reviews

James Patrick in James Patrick Updike's Blog
Sunday 20 of November, 2005
Thanks for visiting my lulu store and blog. My first novel, Realm Of Dreams, is now for sale.

There is an interesting discussion going on in the Reviews forum. Far too many authors on Lulu are trading reviews of novels, many based solely on 5 or ten page previews. This simply results in both people giving each other a 6 star review with two lines of generic glowing praise. Unfortunately, this makes the reviews on lulu all become suspect and meaningless. I've asked for some people to give me an honest review. Any reviews you see on my site will be unsolicited and not traded for. Therefore, although they will not be all 6 star glowing reviews about how I've written the best novel since Hemingway, they will be believable and trustworthy.
