The Man Under the Hill's Language

The previous book, The Man Under the Hill, has a language which I made up, called Analin Huhhul (the Deerherder Language). I developed both a grammar and a vocabulary for the language. I did not base it on any other language. Then I put together the grammatical rules, along with the syllabic writing system, and a vocabulary of all the words in the book (Deerherder-English and English-Deerherder), and also translations of all the Analin Huhhul in the book.
The Man Under the Hill was written to be read without knowing anything about the language, so the reader can try to figure it out along with the main character. But there are a lot of places where it can't be understood based on the what's in the book. So this goes along with it, mainly to be able to understand those parts after the book has been finished!

The Man Under the Hill

I originally wrote "The Man Under the Hill" about 20 years ago, to share with some kids. I spent the past year re-writing the entire story and getting it ready for publication.

The main theme of the story is what it's like to be in a place where everybody speaks an unknown language, how a person gradually begins to be able to speak the language. I based it mainly on my own experiences in countries where they don't speak English.

The language used in the book, the Deerherder language or Analin Huhhul, I first made up for an earlier story I had written, before I had a computer. I've never put that story onto the computer (and probably never will), but I liked the language I had invented and decided to write a new story around that language.
