Stewart Dunaway

Here are my collections of books written for different areas of interest. 1)History 2)Genealogy 3)Stock Market 4)Hobby - Astronomy Many of these items were written years ago and I finally took the time to update and get them in order to be published. My astronomy books are written for the beginner, someone interested in this hobby, especially from a photographer's view. This can be expensive and my books document this hobby, as a beginner, for the beginner. Most books I read on this hobby leave out many of the simple (assumed) details that I document, since I couldn't find it in any ONE book I read. My history books are a combination of American and Floridana. As 5th generation Orlando resident (although no longer) our family was deeply involved in the growth of this area. This got me interested in genealogy and thus more books. The stock market is where I work, and as an individual investor I have written a beginners guide to trading stocks, updated from all my experiences. Common sense is the key to this book, NOT how to get rich quick. Genealogy books cover our family history, and you cant discuss one family without branching out to all the relatives, and the Dunaway's of Central Florida covers MANY Central Florida's early residents. The Carter's of Maryland cover the founders of Resinol Soap, as well as my wife's side of the family tree. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT MY BOOKS JUST EMAIL ME. - STEWART

Like a bear with his stern in a corner
This book documents a part of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution immediately after the Race to the Dan and leading up to the Battle at Guilford Courthouse. The period between February and March 1781 was an important time for North Carolina as well as America as a whole. Patriot forces continued to skirmish with British Gen Cornwallis. Although none of these events were paramount or decisive, they illustrated the fortitude of the American Spirit. This strong resolve sent a clear message to the British that the patriots would rather fight than remain logy to the King. Read about Hart’s Mill, Pyle’s Defeat, Clapp’s Mill and Weitzel’s Mill. Learn what occurred, the issues and impacts surrounding each of these unique events. The title of this book comes from a letter written by Col. Otho Williams to Gen Greene describing Cornwallis’ tactics during this time period, detailing one of the many aspects that are fully documented in this book.

  Thomas Burke
Thomas Burke, a poet, a medical doctor, a lawyer, North Carolina’s third governor, has a most interesting life. This book provides complete details on his life with many of his letters being quoted, as opposed to paraphrased opinions about him; you can read it for yourself. Further, his letter to Gen. George Washington shows his deep thinking and great common sense. His activities in the Continental Congress are amazing, and his views of civil rights were way ahead of his time.

  Battle at Lindley's Mill
This booklet documents the Battle of Lindley's Mill located in North Carolina, during the Revolutionary War. This historical battle, a 4 hour fight (very long for Rev. War) occurred to free Gov. Burke who was captured along with 200 residents of Hillsborough, by nasty Tory David Fanning. **UPDATED ** from additional research from Pension records. More work continues on this battle, but this new version documents more of the varrying information - which shows the difficutly in confirm EXACT information, although some authors will pick what they feel is best - I leave it to the reader to decide. * Updated * to include Edmund Fanning to David Fanning letters, and British Maj Craig's letters dealing with Burke, Fanning, and Butler's forces! Also a lot of the Lindley Family deed records and more family information.

Battle at Clapp's Mill
The Battle at Clapp's Mill is another event in North Carolina, during the American Revolution, specifically - the Southern Campaign. This battle occurs after the Race to the Dan, as Cornwallis retreats to Hillsborough, then to the Alamance, and Tarleton clashes with Patriot forces. Read about this very large contingent of men, what occured and where this occured. Included in this book is a complete overview of the battle, along with new USGS maps, diagrams and modern views of where we believe this battle occured in Alamance County (today) (Orange Co. during the Rev. War). Updated with information about the 23rd a foot, and 1939 aerial photo of the battle site.

  The Battle at Hart's Mill
This booklet details the Revolutionary battle (skirmish) at Hart's Mill, located on the Eno River, just west of Hillsborough, NC. This event occurred whilst Cornwallis was in Hillsborough attempting to enlist more loyalists. The Americans killed and captured those men at the mill site, right under his nose! Read about the history of this mill site, starting with the Regulation, as well as the discussion of WHERE this battle occurred during the Southern Campaign of the Rev. War.

  The Battle at Weitzel's Mill
The Battle at Weitzel's Mill is the last skirmish between British and Patriot forces. British Cornwallis will ultimately meet Gen Greene at Guilford Courthouse, just after this event. Prior to this clash, the same forces met at Clapp's Mill. However, this battle has several unique situations and Tarleton and Cornwallis disagree on the next moves. Read about this interesting location along with Weitzel and Summers Mill history.

Civil War in the American Revolution
This book details the civil war that occurred in North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. The fighting between Tory and Patriot was severe, and the Southern Campaign is not that well known. This book focuses on this aspect of the Revolutionary War. It includes a lot of details, from primary sources so that the reader can get first hand knowledge from those invovled and not just prose from an author or historian. Included is a detailed discussion about the Pardon and Oblivion Act and other NC specific Acts that detail the "healing" of the state. This was required to intergrate Loyalist and Patriot back together.

Every Blood of them Tories - Complete Guide to Pyle's Defeat
During the American Revolution in North Carolina, there was a very controversial event when Robert E. Lee's dad - Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee using a discretionary tactic (stratagem) removed over 300 Tories from service. John Pyle was leading his Loyalist men to locate Col Tarleton of the British Army and mistaking Lee's men for Tarleton, resulted in a bloody fight, killing many of the Tories. This has been given the name of Pyle's Defeat, Pyle's Massacre, and Pyle's Hacking Match. What makes this story, about the same old story different? Primarily it is in the way the information is provided to the reader, in a very methodical approach, as well as, providing all of the information to the reader, and not let the authors "add value" by re-writing what those who were there, had to say. Included is a research section on the Pyle and Holt families and other land/map/area research to assist in documenting possible locations of this event.

This book includes examples of the acutal petitions from the counties located in the Piedmont. Images are included to show examples of maps and drawings that were included with these petitions. Mill records and laws are also included. This book provides a great overview and insight to the over 3000 petitions I have transcribed from the N.C. Archives.

North Carolina Tavern Bonds
Ordinary Bonds were required by law under both British and American rule. These records are from the NC Archive. The actual document was photographed and included for each record. A transcript was made, and this was then indexed and cataloged. This will enable researchers to quickly locate Tavern owners. Not all counties retained these very old records. The back cover provides a list of counties and quantity of records found. There are over 200 bonds in this book.

Granville County, N.C. - Road Records - Vol 2 (1800-1814)
The second volume of Granville Road records continues the documentation of this large collection of road petitions, the largest in all of N.C. I did not transcribe signatures.
Print: $21.00

  Granville County, N.C. - Road Records Vol 3 (1815-1821)
In the continuation of Granville's very large collection of records from the NC Archives (Raleigh) Volume 3 covers more time into 1821. This volume, to me, is more about road maintenance issues than new petitions. That said, there are petitions for new routes and changing existing roads. There is a special folder about Oxford dealing with connecting roads from Mr. Littlejohn. I have included some 18xx maps of Oxford to help illustrate the discussions.
Print: $21.00

  Granville County, NC - Road Records V4 - 1820-1829

This is a collection of recrords whereby citizens requested a new road, change an existing road, or stop a road, for their county. Granville County, NC - Road Records - Vol. 5 - 1830-1849
Here is the 5th volume in a massive collection of road and bridge records for Granville County, N.C. There are (at this point in time) 5 volumes of road records and one volume of bridge records. There is a possibility of a 6th volume for road, but more towards the civil war and modern era. Never the less, this book is a continuation of the effort to document road petitions in the State Archives. Images of each record is provided and a short transcript. Signatures are not transcribed. Names, locations, and key words are all indexed for searching.
Print: $21.00

Randolph County, NC - Bridge and Mill Records
Here is the Bridge and MILL records from the N.C. Archives for Randolph County. The records are very thorough, although the bridge records are not that old. As with all my road/bridge books, the original images are included and a transcript of the details of the bridge. AMAZING - Mill petitions that survived the years, were also sent to the Archives. Ususally, only Court Minutes ever document the mill requests (damming of the rivers). These OLD records are very informative. Sadly, there wasnt a lot of them. The more modern records are law suits.
Print: $20.00

Randolph County, NC - Road Records Vol 1 (1797-1835)
Volume 1 of the Randolph County Road Records spans a large portion of time, and many records. Each petition is titled, the original image included, including a short transcript. Randolph County, NC - Road Records - Vol 2
This is the 2nd Volume for Randolph County. This collection is one of the best in the state. There are more hand-drawn maps in Randolph Co., records than other counties. Almost 300 pages, in this volume, and it required 3 volumes for roads, 1 for bridges which also includes Mill petitions - which are very rare.

  Orange County, NC - Bridge Records - 1787 - 1865
Bridge records are petitions from the public requesting a bridge to be errected across a river/stream/creek typically where fords used to be, or at locations nearby these earlier crossings. Sometimes, although rare, they would develop a new road, but it would require a bridge across a stream. Never the less, this book, like the many volumes of road records, has an image of the petition along with a short transcript of the informaiton. Some maps show these bridges and as I could locate them in modern times I added those maps as well. A great research tool for road locations, migration paths and some interesting construction information (minimal) costs etc.

Guilford County, NC Road and Bridge Records - Vol 1
This is the first in a series of books documenting road and bridge petitions for Guilford County, N.C. This book is written more for the researcher than as a historical book to read. The location of roads and bridges is critical in establishing locations of events, places or people, since they didnt live, eat, shop, go to the mill etc., without traveling some road. These court records reside in the Archives of N.C. at Raleigh. This is NOT an exhaustive content, in that, there were records that have signatures and text not explaining locations as well as numerous overseer records that I did NOT include. This book has the image of the record and a short transcript pertaining to the location. This is indexed and there is a table of content so that each record (title given) can be easily found. There are some period maps showing locations, and a few modern views as well.

Guilford County, NC Road and Bridge Records Vol 2
Here is the second of three volumes for Guilford County, NC. The road and bridge records are combined for this county, and each record in this book is a photo image, coupled with a concise transcription of the petition. This book was written to assist researchers locate old road and bridges. This book does not represent every single slip of paper in the NC Archives, since some are just a name, others deal with overseer assignment. Therefore this is not an exhaustive copy of every slip of paper in the archives across three boxes - un-indexed!
Print: $22.00

Guilford County, NC Road and Bridge Records Vol 3
This is the last of the three volumes of Guilford County road and bridge records. This volume, like the others, includes images of the record, a transcript of its content. Some records have maps from period times and a few with modern maps showing these old locations. I found that the Guilford County records have some interesting historical information about the times, areas etc. This volume includes the time-frame when the NC Railroad was being built and the impact to the roads were two fold. First you have people wanting to change the routes due to the railroad and then people wanted a road from their village to the DEPOT! Some mention business as the reason. Never the less, these records expose more than just complaints.

There are a few maps that were included with the petitions, as seen on the covers. Each record has a title which is in the table of contents, and the book is completely indexed. NOTE, there are a lot of names, and spelling of names and transcribing signatures is a massive project. This book does NOT represent the transcription of every name on a piece of paper. This book covers details of King’s Mountain including old pictures and current pictures which helps properly document this battle. I also cover Hillsborough, NC history and key revolutionary citizens including their homes. There are many pictures in this book almost 1-2 per page. Even if you don’t care about the Fulkerson family, this book covers enough historical information that I believe it has educational value for all ages and interest in early American history.

The Manual of The Mother Church - A Historical Overview (B&W)
This is a very detailed book showing the changes to the Manual of the Mother Church over the 89 versions or editions. Mrs. Eddy said that the Manual was changed as events required. This book is an attempt to define "cause and event" throughout all 89 editions. HOWEVER, my collection does not have all 89 editions. With the help of other resources, I have at least 3/4 or more of the editions covered. Actually it could be closer to 90-95% are covered, with ranges, that is - bylaw was changed from this to that, between the 56 and 62 edition, for example. In the last half of the book I focus on the Tenets and key functions with a description of Manual changes by function. Example - Readers - all the changes for this activity. The first part of the book goes by edition number.
