Nancy Shepherd
Nancy Shepherd was born in Wooster, Ohio, and grew up roaming the surrounding countryside. She has three children, six grandchildren, and two cats. Her interests include reading, writing, sewing, quilting, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and gardening. Her studies have led to degrees in Equine Management from Ohio State University and in Business Management from Akron University. So far she has been able to avoid working in either field.
Nancy backpacked the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail in 2001 and the 700-mile International Appalachian Trail in 2003, and is always dreaming of the next long hike. She spent the winter of 2004-05 living in her Astro van, first at a hot springs resort in Arizona, then on the beach in Texas. Currently she is bicycling 13,000 miles around the United States. www.ohmygodim50.com

My Own Hike
At the age of 41, and having never backpacked more than thirty miles in her life, Nancy Shepherd sets off to hike the 2,168 miles of the Appalachian Trail. “My Own Hike” follows along as she grows from an inexperienced hiker into a confident long-distance backpacker and gains the self-assurance to go beyond the perceived “rules” of the trail and end the hike on her own terms.
